About the biggest concern I have in planning our AOS trip booked for January is what night to go to Portofinos. :). Any suggestions? Or, do you remember the dinner menus?

If it makes a difference, we're doing the Aruba route.

I am also wondering this. We are sailing the Aruba route in September and want to make reservations right when we get onboard. Does anyone have any advice?

We just did the other Southern Caribbean route on AOS last week-- I would say Caribbean Night would be a good night to go to Portofinos. The menu selection wasn't so great that night, in my opinion.

HI .. we were just on the May 22 sailing of the AOS. We had a great time. We were always able to get seconds or two dinners at any time with our waiter.. My husband would sometimes order two dinners.. We ordered extra lobster tails. We always had soda with our dinner free of charge. We never smelled any sewage anywhere on the ship.

We loved the cruise and will continue to cruise with Royal Caribbean. This was our 7th. I did however think the entertainment wasn't up to par. We only went to 2 shows.

Any other questions, please ask.. Enjoy you will have a great time!

RCCL started charging for soft drinks in the dining room in 2002.

Thanks for posting this. I do remember the Explorer in 9/01 having free soft drinks. But I had such a great time on the Explorer that I would have sailed RCCL again anyway. Free sodas is not enough of an incentive to make me choose one line over the other. :)

Edited part: We sailed the AOS in 4/05. We had a great time. The ship was great (our room and attendant were not). It didn't spoil our trip we had a good time anyway, dispite almost being swept out to sea in Curacao!

Do you remember what night it was ie. tuesday or Curaco port? Just so we can plan ahead! I agree, caribbean night is not that great menu wise! Thanks!

On DCL soda are free in the dining room and at the drink station on deck 9. I' confused how some people are saying they did not pay for soda at dinner and others did.

What other theme nighs were there?

What was the entertainment? I am concerned it won' be something for the whole famly.

Hi Butchde,

We were on AOS May 15 sailing - (hi manfromatlanta - did we see you?) Anyway, was a wonderful time. Like Jenjes, we had all the appetizers, entrees, lobster tails, etc. that we wanted. Our waitress was wonderful. Ship was clean, seas were kind of rough first several days, but like manfromatlanta said, hardly noticed ship movement during that time. Carib night is Tuesday, and not that great, but hey, I was simply pleased to not have to cook! :D Entertainment was nothing to get excited about but we took in a few shows and contributed to casino. You will have a great time on AOS - we would go again in a second!:p

This is our first cruise on Royal Caribbean, we are very excited. We have in the past Cruised on NCL (Pride of Aloha)and Costa. The reviews we read on NCL Pride of Aloha were horrible. We almost cancelled. Thank goodness we didn't. We had a wonderful trip, the ship was excellent the not the best but good.

After reading the reviews I was ready to cancel.

After our first cruise (Costa) we found Cruise Critics Site. So many disliked Costa the food the international passangers, the food...etc

WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME.

In other words discover the truth for yourself. We love to travel . If you love to travel and experience something different you will enjoy your cruise. If you are the type of person that is only happy if you can have meatloaf on Tuesdays served on your favorite plate with potatos at 2 O'clock and meat at 6 o'clock. STAY HOME you will be happier.

For all of you people asking which night is best to eat in Portofino's. I would agree that Caribbean night would be your best choice, (for me it is not a choice as I am allergic to bananas, and they are in almost every dish on that night). On the Adventure of the Seas, Caribbean night is Tuesday, which is the day that you are in Aruba. Many folks will still be ashore, as the ship does not sail until 0100 on Wednesday.

One potential problem that you should consider. If you have early dinner seating, Tuesday evening is the suggested night for you to see the ice skating show, a leisurely dinner at Portofino's may cause you to miss the ice show.

We have been on two other Voyager class ships and we found the ice shows to be excellent. Look at the schedule for the other night that the ice show is presented, and see of you can work out some alternative for dining that night.

While on the Mariner for my honeymoon my bride and I ate at CHOPS the first night. This was great due to the fact that it was a very casual night in the main dining room. I suggest night 1

The first night you board is the Dining room even open? Or is it just Buffet. We sail at 10:00pm so I am uncertain. Does anyone know?

WE are sailing AOS in Oct and also sailing out at 10, from everything I have read, dinner is served in the dining room that night, although I have read that second seating dinner is 1/2 later the first night due to the muster drill, anyone who has sailed recently can you confirm this?:)

Yes, you may have dinner in the dining room the first night. We had second seating, and it was on schedule, right after the muster drill. There is no CHOPS on AOS, but there is Portofinos and Johnny Rockets.

Spent our fourth cruise (All RCI) on AOS. First time on a Voyager class ship.

AWESOME SHIP!

We were crowded (3600 pax) because of Spring Break on the East Coast somewhere. A lot of kids! It was also very crowded (more like packed) on formal nights (which were also the "at Sea" days for our itinerary - Aruba,Caracao, St Maarten, St Thomas).

Our Captain was great (although more recent reviews suggest a different name).

Entertainment was a bit off but it was the first week of a new troupe of singers and dancers. CD was too much like one we had previous year on Enchantment but for the couple with us this time (i.e., not with us last year) they thought he was great.

The ice show is NOT to be missed - best I have ever seen.

Food was amazing - some at our table got thirds and fourths on lobsters. I often ended upwith two entrees (or extra garlic mashed potatoes - not to be missed).

Johnny Rockets was a hoot and not crowded (despite all the kids).

Stability wise - best yet despite some rough(ish) seas. (We found Grandeur and Enchantment to have less stability - the AOS was smooth).

My guess is the reviewer had a bad week. Ours could have been (crowds) but with a ship this size- we found ways to have fun.

You'll have a blast!:)

We are leaving on AOS on July 3 2005. Anyone been on AOS and had an AFT Cabin? What was the view like?

LizC, we had cabin 7388 aft corner balcony on the June 5 sailing - the views are spectacular. In St. Lucia we did a 180 in port and sort of backed into our parking spot. In Barbados the captain had to parallel park between two tankers and it was fun to watch. Leaving ports was the best part - great pictures, especially with the sun setting!

We were on AOS on May 15th, we didn't experience any problems ordering seconds, in fact my DH ordered 2 entrees everynight. We could have had as many lobster tails as we wanted, our wait staff was exceptional on this cruise. We brought wine to dinner everynight and we were not charged a corkage fee. Some of the bottles we had from our travel agent but some of them we bought on the pier.

I did feel that the production shows were not as good as we are used to. We have cruised many times with RCL and are used to better quality shows.

There was a problem with the toilet where it didn't flush, fortunately this didn't last too long. It was a problem on the ship and not just our cabin because I called maintenance. Outside of the weather the first couple of days it was a nice cruise.
