Does the Jewel sail in international waters when leaving Seattle for Alaska?

No. US and Canadian waters only I believe. Through the inside passage. Why do you ask? I was on her this past summer

Casino was open on our AK cruse, as was the duty free shop. Had to get away from Seattle first though. Not sure if there were other limitations, like traveling up the AK coast from Ketchikan to Juneau

Sure would be nice to KNOW what the real question is, instead of everyone guessing.

----------------------------------

As to cell phone - there MIGHT be times when you pick up shore signals if they turn off the tower onboard, and you are near populated areas, and/or that signal is stronger than the onboard tower. Your phone will always show which carrier it is connected to.

And, since some folks forget. Alaska is still United States and covered under domestic phone plans. Canada is international, though some plans are available from various carriers that include Canada.

I sailed on a Princess ship to Alaska out of San Francisco quite a few years ago. When we arrived in Juneau, which was about midway through a 12 day cruise, the officials boarded the ship and shut the casino down. It was a very small casino back then, as I recall, just a small room with some slot machines along the walls and a few tables. But I remember it being closed for a few days until we were out of Alaskan waters. I heard people saying that it had never happened before and that the cruise lines would fight it or stop sailing to Alaska. I wasn't the cruise fanatic that I am now, so I didn't follow what happened after that cruise.

I asked the question only to find out if the waters would be calm or a little rocky. Someone I spoke to said NCL cruised though international waters on way to Alaska. Thanks for all your input...:)

International doesn't mean smooth or rough

The ships sail in US and Canadian waters. "International" waters means the ocean outside the territorial waters of any nation. Alaska cruises do not sail in "international waters"

When in port the Jewel turned off her cell tower and my Verizon and ATT connections worked fine.

There is absolutely no way to predict whether waters will be rocky or smooth, unless you are booking a day before you leave. We have experienced water sailing out of New York going south to the Bahamas that was smooth as glass for three days, and have sailed from New York headed to Bermuda and rocked and rolled like you can't believe. You could have a clear, sunny day, and a storm a thousand miles away will cause swells that'll make you bounce off the walls when you walk down the hall. That's just part of the adventure :D

The seas in the inside passage are generally calmer because the islands serve as a jetty and stop the ocean waves

It was like this except for the first day out of Seattle when we had some higher winds and rain

Here's the first day...still not very rough at all

Well, that gave me a nice morning chuckle.

As often happens here, many of us try to answer a question that we THINK was asked and not was really being asked.

LOL!

Thanks for all your input. Duh, as you can see I have no clue about cruising, but I can't wait to find out more...Thanks again for putting up with dumb questions.:)

There are no dumb questions! Only ridiculous answers :D

Does anyone know if they allow 18-21 years old to drink if their parents sign the waiver. We've done that on other cruises but we were in international water and into Mexico etc..

Alcohol police - Please keep your opinion to yourself:rolleyes:

Not on Alaska and Hawaii itineraries. See policy below (from NCL's FAQs):

Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol.

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel. However, passengers 18 years of age or older are permitted to consume alcoholic beverages when sailing on round-trip European voyages without having to complete the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form.

We've all taken a "first cruise" and have learned along the way. Have fun planning!

I sure have and after 12 cruises, I'm still learning as I go.

jerseymermaid you are on the cruise the week before us.

Enjoy your cruise.

No dumb questions. But, as you can see, when you do ask, try to be specific. Too easy for folks to ASSUME something else was asked.
