Hotels or Apartments in Rio

We are disembarking in Rio in November and are undecided about accommodation in an Hotel or Apartment. We are there for 4 days.

Maybe the Sofitel at Copacabana or would Ipanema be better any suggestions or recommendations would be helpful.

It really depends on your budget, which you have not stated (in reais please). Rio hotels are outrageously priced right now. A rental apartment would certainly be the much cheaper way to go. As to the tourist neighborhoods, middle/upper class Ipanema is more expensive and Leblon still more so, including prices for nearby restaurants. Also the metro station in Ipanema is currently closed; don't know if it will be open again by November. Copacabana can be a bit more reasonable, and has lots more food choices and access to the metro, but some people find the movement and the middle/working class residents make them less comfortable. (Personally I find it an interesting neighborhood and as safe as anwhere else.)

Short term rentals for tourists are not as popular in Rio as in some other cities (especially Buenos Aires). Though it's not the high season in Nov you may find it difficult to find something worth the hassle of dealing with a pvt agency or owner. For 4 nights, bite the bullet and go with a hotel anywhere in Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana or Leme.
