Has Anyone Done the Baths on their Own?

Tortola to Virgin Gorda, that is.

I read how people get nervous about NOT taking a Carnival tour just to be sure to get back to the ship, but are there any risk takers out there that have actually done this themselves?

Any personal experiences?

Depending on what time you have in Tortola it might not be worth it to use the ferries. Speedy and Smith will take you over and back for about $20-25, Carnival will charge you $80. I see you are on Legend, I dont think the ferry will work for you. There was a link on this board about someone on Legend thinking about trying it, if I can find the post I will link it.

Yes, we did this last Sept (2004). I led a group of about 30 people to this excursion without booking through Carnival. When you get off of the ship, you can take a very short taxi ride to the ferry port where you will board the ferry over to the Virgin Gorda. Admission into the Virgin Gorda was free; and it was one of the best shore tours I've ever done! I can't remember exactly what we paid for everyting (taxi, ferry) but it was much, much, much, cheaper than doing it throught Carnival. Have Fun!

We did this in January, and it worked out fine. You need to figure out a timeline depending on what your schedule is in port. Make sure you visit the websites Dayton cruiser listed to check the ferry schedules. The ferrys leave and return at different times, so find the one that fits your timeline. You also need to be aware that, once you are at Virgin Gorda, it takes another 20 minutes drive to get to the Baths. Also, when you buy your ferry tickets, ask for the package that includes transportation to the drive to the Baths. It's cheaper than paying for the taxi separately. They also offer a package that includes lunch, but that requires more time.

Lastly, if you go, try to reserve a little time for a drink at the restaurant at the Top of the Baths. The views are incredible. It's an unforgettable way to finish your visit to the beautiful Baths.

I hope that it works out for you!

MrPete .... Yes, we have gone to The Baths on our own on the ferry and also with Patouche ... BUT we did these on "Land Based" trips so there was not a problem with timing ....

Whatever you decide, there's a thread in the Ports of Call section under Caribbean Other with a site for an absolutely wonderful map (full description of each bath plus other helpful info) !! :) I'm in love with that map! :p So wish we'd had it for our first visit!

The Bath of Virgin Gorda Thread (click here)

Hope this helps a bit and that you will enjoy The Baths as much as we have!

Happy Sailing! OCruisers :)

As long as you check out everything beforehand like how your getting to the baths and the time I don't see why not?I went to the baths 10 years ago we rented a trimaran NOT SURE OF THE SPELLING.The baths is a beautiful place not to be missed.
