Any Regatta Alaska Returnees Yet?

:)

From our veranda on board Regatta in Port Frederick Bay, Hoonah, this afternoon. :D

Hoonah is absolutely gorgeous. The humpack whales were about 100 feet offshore, not far from the docking area. We were watching them all day, without hiring a boat, last year! :)

MaryGGG - it was so warm I sat out there in a short sleeve t-shirt! But you will need a warm jacket and something rain proof, just in case. It poured with rain in Ketchikan and today as we approach Hubbard Glacier, it is very foggy, but trying hard to clear. We have just been out on deck and I imagine if you come from Florida you will find it quite chilly, so warm fleece on today. I will post some more photos later - I think they describe the weather and Alaska much better than I can with words.

We went out on a smaller boat with Hoonah Adventure Tours in Icy Straight - 16 people in a brand new covered boat with lots of deck space for everyone with no pushing for that special shot!

We saw lots of humpbacks and four of them came right up to the boat and split as they swam and performed towards us going around and under us! It was truly magical and I could have reached down and touched them, they were so close. I think they were having a bit of fun with us, giving us and the boat a literal rock and roll whale experience! I will never forget that moment. :D

Thank you so much. We have long sleeved stuff that we can layer ; I think the scenery will be so overwhelming that I won't care. Also, at some point, I have been in really frigid weather -- I went to school in South Bend Indiana which may be the coldest place in the world (LOL).

Well it could have been Florida today except we had no humidity! ;) High around 75F and sunny, sunny all the way in Seward. It has been very warm here now for a few days and it is head-line news!

So today we went hiking to the Exit Glacier and started off with thinner fleece jackets which were quickly discarded for short sleeve t-shirts - thank goodness I hadn't worn my thermals underneath my trousers! LOL!

Absolutely glorious and the scenery is simply stunning - the air is so fresh and we are enjoying every beautiful moment!

People were sunbathing around the pool and enjoying the moment.

I have lots of photos to share but uploading them is just not co-operating.

Good morning from Kodiak - another beautiful sunny start to the day with temps expected to reach the high 60s. We are off on a bear flight seeing trip - so excitement levels high! :D

Photo taken last night at 11pm - we are used to the light this late.

Photo upload now not working too well, so will try later again.

Anyway I've finished my excellent room service breakfast and I have to tell you that everything we ordered arrives, is hot and beautifully presented, with a smile! It is a pure delight to have this in the morning especially when going out on a trip. We have booked our own tours but many are clearly using the Oceania tours, buses already starting to line up and some offerings today have 3 or 4 departure times. Big groups are not for us, but I understand some like the comfort and convenience of ships tours.

Oh happy days, I'm off to see the bears! (Hopefully!) LOL!

Lunch in waves after Hubbard - getting warmer the further away from the Glacier.

Hi Fairbourne,

Thanks for the pix!

Dining outside while surrounded by stunning scenery was one of the high points of my Regatta cruise to Alaska.

And viewing the Hubbard Glacier while sipping on brandy-enhanced hot chocolate was pretty good, too!

Have just returned from Seattle having cruised on the Regatta on the Majesty of Alaska cruise ex Vancouver on the 25th May. You will love the boat and crew, smiles and laughter all round. Food scrummy and lots of it, cruise director's suit was looking a bit tight at end. Sunny all the way except for Hoonah. Embarkation in Vancouver a nightmare, 2 other very large boats in at the same time, 3hours from bags out of Taxi to arriving at cabin, felt sorry for travellers from USA. Tip for those disembarking at Bell Street Seattle, Porters will carry your bags to both the Edgewater and the Marriot Courtyard across the street. Will write a fuller critique when over the jet lag. Regards and have fun Alan

Thanks for the great memories. We were on the Regatta almost two years ago and Alaska is up there with one of my favourite cruises. I actually thought I wouldn't enjoy this cruise as I always gravitate towards warmer destinations. However each day was fantastic, breathtaking scenery, fresh air, wonders of nature..... I could go on and on. I also loved the fact that I wasn't in a rush to go anywhere - I was happy sitting on the balcony, rugged up, sipping hot chocolate and watching the world go by.

I cannot wait to cruise this amazing part of the world again. Enjoy your cruise - I wish I was coming with you.:):)

We arrived in Skagway this morning to mostly beautiful sunny skies, a tad overcast and quite warm - just a light fleece and we were good to go.

We headed out early with Chilkoot Charters, bus up, train down - thanks to all who told us sit right side up if on the bus and right side down on the train! :) But as we were not crowded in our bus or carriage, we all had great views and could move around on the train.

Another few photos - I think now I have my DH on the case, "we" have worked out an easier way to upload these photos! LOL!

The bear photos were taken in Katmai National Park, more details on that trip in the post-cruise review, this is just a taster - but I would just say if you are humming and heying about doing a bear flightseeing trip out of Kodiak to the Katmai coast because of the cost - my recommendation is DO IT - it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We went with http://www.kingfisheraviation.com (Kyle - a very safe and capable pilot and hugely knowledgeable) - or indeed anywhere else where you are thinking about doing it and you choose a reliable operator. When we took the photos, we were standing on the plane floats about maybe 15 feet off the beach - close enough for me! Close enough to hear them crunching down on the clams!

The coastal views coming in towards the Katmai coast.

Off to dinner tonight in Polo - I will do a post-cruise review of the ship, food etc., as I want to give you more detail on that and I just do not have the time right now with all this eating, drinking, socialising, spa-ing (is that a word?) - well you know how it goes! ;) But suffice to say you will not be disappointed with the food and the choices on board this ship.

Love your pictures! Cannot wait (4 more days).

Mary - have a fabulous cruise and we will wave you off with gritted teeth, oops, no no, I mean wave you off with happy smiles on Tuesday!!LOL!

And to you too Darleen1421 - happy cruising, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Warm and sunny again today in Wrangell and sitting out here on our balcony enjoying a lovely cup of tea and some goodies (not that we need any more goodies, but somehow you always manage to nibble one or two!) brought by our gracious butler every afternoon around this time. What am I going to do when I get home? ;)
