Handicap Parking at Port Everglades

Does anyone know if passenger cars with handicap license plates get to park free as they do in Miami? We just showed our handicap card and they waved us through when we were leaving the parking garage in Miami.

Thanks in advance.

I can assure you that they DO NOT let you park free at Port Everglades with a disabled parking permit. The port garages charge $12 per day for parking and the only concession to the handicap permit are the marked parking spaces that are located close to the elevator. However, just outside the entrance to the port is a Park N'Fly lot and parking in that lot is somewhat less expensive than the port parking garages. The last time I was there, the cost was $7.50 per day and they do provide shuttle service to and from the piers where the ships are docked. The Miami area seems to be the only city in Florida that offers free parking to those with the handicap permit.;)

Miami-Dade county has a heart for handicapped people, Broward county only cares about the buck. I have been told personally by one of the county commissioners, that if they let handicapped people park for free at the airport or pier they would lose 7 million dollars a year.

Just to clarify, the lot at the Port of Miami is run by Miami-Dade County itself and cannot charge for handicap parking. The lot at Port Everglades is run by a private agency and is therefore not subject to any laws governing handicap parking by Broward County.

Hope this info helps!
