drsb Posted June 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2013 Hi, I was wondering if there are taxis at the ports that you can hire for the day for a reasonable price, in particular Helsinki and Stockholm? thanks, Deb
John Bull Posted June 7, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 7, 2013 No. Or more accurately, Yes. But the cost would be very heavy. This isn't like the Caribbean or South America or SE Asia. In Europe taxis are much more expensive. OK if you want to save time by taking a taxi instead of bus/tram/metro/train for a few miles such as port to town centre, but don't expect to hire a taxi for a day for much under a couple of hundred euros or equiv. And the drivers generally are just drivers. Their standards of English are pot-luck, ok for getting A to B but they're unlikely to have good enough English - or knowledge - to act as guides. And it's not necessary either. Stockholm centre/sights is pretty compact. If you berth along Stadtsgarten (sp?) you're right by the hop-on ferries - the only transport you'll need. If you berth at Frimlingham (sp?) you'll need a local bus or taxi hop to the centre, then probably the hop on ferries to get around - Gamla Stan, Vasa museum etc. In Helsinki you'll need transport from ship to centre. There's lots of options, by taxi would probably be the most expensive but not excessive. Some sights are around the market square by the waterfront, others (the rock church & the Olympic complex) by circular tram route from that square. Sorry, don't recall the tram route number but others will - or ask locally. JB :)
