pickler1 Posted August 4, 2013 #26 Share Posted August 4, 2013 You are welcome... we had great conch fritters at a shack called Robinson's (or close to that)in the food area. There were about 5 people in there cooking, breaking fresh conch out of the shell and frying it up - it was full and busy in there. Wonderful food and reasonable. I have been to Bishops out towards the East End for some great conch and this rivaled it. Again unless the beach or gambling is your destination the pier area will fill most needs now... hopefully it will grow bigger! There is a beach within walking distance but a restaurant that is famous for the shark feeding is near, so not sure I would go in! If a pool/casino went it there would be no need to leave the pier area... Hi Bobsfamily, Do you know the name of the beach that is walking distance from the port? Also, is Senior Frogs a regular size restaurant at the port like the one in Nassau? Thanks for all of the information.
bobsfamily Posted August 4, 2013 Author #27 Share Posted August 4, 2013 The beach really has no name that I know and again it's NOT for getting in. The water is at the mouth of the port, a restaurant(Pier 1) nearby does a shark feeding daily with leftover scraps of fish. https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Unknown+road&hl=en&sll=26.519035,-78.770546&sspn=0.007286,0.013937&geocode=FVqtlAEd_QVO-w%3BFQihlAEdgvxN-w&mra=mru&t=m&z=17 You can see by the map how far it is, beach is near Pier 1. Great for walking, NO SWIMMING! It is the same beach you see coming into the port if you are on the starboard(right) side of the ship. Not sure if Pier 1 is open now, it goes thru periods of open and then closed. Senor Frogs is a "regular" size with the same craziness as the one in Nassau, probably more as those who go are a "captive audience". There are several other bars (will try to add them after Sept. 4th) to choose from with one near SF that seems to be in direct competition for the same "clientele"... YeHAA!! The Nassau Senor Frogs was advertising them last week for the cruisers who were to be in Freeport the next day. Sadly, we were not among that fortunate group but it appears the 241 coupons are working both ways. :D
cruizinisthebest Posted August 13, 2013 #31 Share Posted August 13, 2013 Just got back from Freeport last week and we had a great time there. The port area is 200% better than the last time I went in 2009. Port Lucaya area was great. Loved my time there. It beat out Nassau for me this time. KBD1516 Posted August 16, 2013 #33 Share Posted August 16, 2013 Did you go to the east end on the jeep excursion? I really don't know We went to the south shore and into the piney woods and drove out on clough's jetty road. Wound up at Taino beach for an hour of swimming in the surf. On my Oct 2011 (Stormtober) cruise, I got my first tasted of cracked conch at Robinson's Seafood Delight...came with salad and a very frosty bottled water, which was welcome, since it was hot and muggy, even for the Bahamas. I found the Robinsons very friendly, and their food very good. Wish we had conch here in Northeast Ohio...
jeffer_rachel Posted September 12, 2013 #36 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Great info! Thanks! My boyfriend and I will be on our first cruise Oct 18th. Can't wait!! We haven't booked any excursions bc we don't really want to spend that kind of money. We've been hoping we could still enjoy Freeport and Nassau on our own without doing the excursions! :-D

We've been hoping we could still enjoy Freeport and Nassau on our own without doing the excursions! :-D You can have a wonderful time in both ports without purchasing a excursion. Like bobsfamily has said the area at the port in Freeport is fun~you can eat local food have a nice cold beverage and see some local flair! In Nassau there is a nice beach within walking distance but I am partial to Graycliffs and John Watlings Rum Distillery.

Thanks, Lisa I gather you are talking about Freeport and yes there is a car rental place at the port. It is in the permanent buildings, please do not rent a moped! redfantum Posted September 15, 2013 #40 Share Posted September 15, 2013 Just got back and the the port was quite pleasant. Got free wifi at Sparky's with purchase of a drink (or 3). Password is on the receipt. A little noisy with competing music from the bars, but plenty to do to pass the time if you have no real plans. Did you do it as a round trip or did you get one going and one heading back? I will be there in 3weeks and was thinking of going to the beach and staw market.... Which can mean about 12 people in a van. They want you to pay for the return trip when you get out of the cab at Port Lucaya. If you do they give you a "ticket" for the return trip. I generally decline, give them their money for the ride over and then when ready I pay for the trip back. Not a big deal but I just prefer to do so. Have a wonderful cruise! Jimmycee Posted October 3, 2013 #43 Share Posted October 3, 2013 Is the beach near Pier 1 worth going to? Meaning, decent sand, clean, reasonable amount of beach. We will probably walk there anyway to check it out, but just wondering since you've familiar with it.
zubee23 Posted October 3, 2013 #44 Share Posted October 3, 2013 I would never swim by Pier One! They've been feeding sharks there for years! Better to spend $5. each way and head to beaches in Port Lucaya. I would rather buy lunch than be lunch!

It's on the same side of the island as Port Lucaya.... BUT as zubee says - NO Swimming! Please! Great to wander but not to swim... even a bit.... colleenod Posted October 4, 2013 #46 Share Posted October 4, 2013 I find this whole shark thing a bit concerning!!! Is it ok to swim in port Lucaya??? Just wondering... zubee23 Posted October 4, 2013 #47 Share Posted October 4, 2013 Port Lucaya area is fine. The area by Pier One is the only place I would not swim in Grand Bahama. Shark feedings have been going on at Pier One for years. I'm not against feeding the sharks - just don't want to be their dinner!
