Snorkelling beach?

We are headed to St. Maarten in August and I was wondering if there were any beaches that has some at least decent snorkelling from shore. I am a newbie, so my standards for decent snorkelling are not too high, but I would love the opportunity to do some snorkelling without having to pay for an excursion. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. Maybe I missed it, but I though I read just recently on this board that the ferry to Pinel Island is not operating. I would hate to get out there and not be able to get across. Have things changed?

Ferry guys were on strike because of demolition of a restaurant - one of three - two are left. Even if not running today, I think that the ferries definitely will be running by August.

As I posted earlier, the 'ferry' shuttles were expected to start up again this past Wednesday, on the 17th.

 

I don't have confirmation yet, but, as mentioned, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the info. We will probably play it by ear when we get there. Sounds like a fun spot though.
