There are a number variables.

1 - Which dock if more than one ( some require port some starboard)

2 - Does the captain prefer a certain side ( some port smome starboard)

3 - Does the Chief Engineer require a certain side to do work on a given port day.

4 - Sometimes depends on which direction they enter port and direction of departure.
