From Naples to Civitavecchia by Car

There are four of us flying into Naples on Saturday, Sept 3 and leaving on the Galaxy from Civitavecchio on the 5th. I can get a Hertz wagon for near the price of 4 first class train tickets to drive from Naples to Civitavecchia.

It looks like a 500 km drive on the autostrada in about 3 hours. I've driven in Italy before and anticipate a few wrong turns.

I'm curious whether anyone has left a car at Hertz in Civ.. and then gotten to the port. Could I drive into the port and drop all the bags and people and then go do it by myself?

The train, via Rome, takes you right to the pier at Civita - unless you need to prove your machismo on the Autostrada, the train is the only sane way to go.

We just got back from May 28th Splendor. WE rented car from Civi. to Rome and back. Driving in rome was a nightmare and we will never do it again. However the highways were a no-brainer. Very easy to get around outside of the city.
