Auckland & Sydney Question

Is pickpocketing, or other scams common in these cities like it is in large American and European cities?

 

This will be our first visit, and wonder if we need to take extra precautions like we do when visiting Paris or Rome.

Both cities are fairly relaxed but I am a local, if I was going to a strange city I would take the appropriate precautions . People are friendly in both places so ask for help if you need it. Auckland is a lot smaller and slower than Sydney. Keep away from kings cross in Sydney.

You can not really compare these cities to Paris, Rome, Barcelona etc., because they are not over crowded.

 

Nevertheless you always want to be careful when travelling.

But there is no need to keep a bag across the body for example, carry it as per normal on the shoulder.

 

Just be aware not to give someone the opportunity, like leaving a wallet lying on the bar while going to the toilet, that sort of thing.
