RMM34667 Posted October 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2013 If I understand correctly setting my cell phone to airplane mode will prevent apps on my phone from updating. And that will prevent huge surcharges. Is there anything else I need to do? I usually just remove my battery while sailing and put it back when I reach ports. But I'd like to be reachable this cruise. I have Verizon and I'm pretty sure if I use the phone it's $2.49 per minute, and Texts are .50 to send and .05 to receive. I can live with that. I'm just nervous about data charges. I fell asleep once in Nassau.. Woke up 2 hours later and removed the battery. That nap cost me $60.

caber Posted October 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2013 Turn off your data roaming. That stops the internet connection unless you can find wifi in port. If you are at sea you sometimes get the message that you have latched on to a maritime network. That is expensive but unless you get an incoming call you don`t have to use the phone so won`t incur any charges.
RMM34667 Posted October 28, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted October 28, 2013 Thanks. My niece just sent me instructions (with pictures) to set my data/roaming access to DENY access. Thanks Nicole!
