psedr123 Posted November 14, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 14, 2013 We're taking our first cruise in December (RCI) to Cozumel and Belize City. We have found an excursion that we think we'd enjoy in Cozumel. However, based on the excursions listed (on RCI site and others) we're unable to find something in Belize. Do you think we'd be okay to just "wing it" and explore the port? Any ideas on something we should try? (BTW - there will be two adults and a six-year old).
jmf123 Posted November 14, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 14, 2013 Welcome to CC! While I haven't been to Belize, I suggest checking out the Belize Ports of Call forum here for lots of discussion: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=109. There is currently a similar question to yours posted there. :)

GORDONCHICK Posted November 14, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 14, 2013 Belize isn't a port where I would wander around, especially with a 6yo. Inside the port, you are fine but it's the same shops on every island with the name on the stuff changed. We've been to Belize 3 times, with another stop coming up on Christmas day. It's a beautiful place, but there's rough areas and lots of poverty pretty close to the port gates. Twice, we took a private tour from a wonderful man named Maurice. He's lived in the country all of his life even when it was British Honduras. He took us to Altun Ha, and then into the jungle to find the howling monkeys and huge iguanas. Maurice just doted on our son, who was probably about 7. The last time we went to Belize, we finally did cave tubing and zip lining - which was a complete blast. We booked with cave-tubing.com and we're gonna do it again with them! If you do just stay in the port, this won't be a stop you'll enjoy very much. Get out and see the country of Belize! Colorado Kat Posted November 14, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 14, 2013 Belize is one of the few ports I would not wander without a plan. Very poor area. Very aggressive vendors. I would pre-plan something, and have someone pick me up.

If you don't have any interest in cave diving, jungle tours etc. a very pleasant day can be had by taking a ferry boat to Ambergris Caye, rent a golf cart and explore. Of course be mindful of the time you need to be back on the ship. San Pedro Ambergris Caye has a three street "downtown" and beautiful beaches. There is also Caye Caulker which would be a different ferry boat and it is the kind of place that if you wanted to get away from it all, this would be the place to go. Arrange your transportation from the cruise ship area to the ferry boat piers. We spent a week on Ambergris Caye and it was the most laid back vacation ever. :)
Treven Posted November 15, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 15, 2013 (edited) When I had a stop at Belize City, I'd arranged an excursion through Princess. The tour guide only made one photo op stop and that was at a brick church on the outskirts (the bricks used in the construction of the church all had been used as ballast on sailing ships. He drove through a portion of "downtown", after he made sure we all had our doors locked on his van. We later stopped at the aloe vera factory, then he took us to the only brewery in the country where we got to sample (as much as we wanted) all the different beers they produce - if memory serves correctly, they make 8 different ones. No, I definitely agree that Belize City is NOT a place you can do "on your own". Like others won't get off their ship that stops at Jamaica, I won't get off at Belize any longer. Bonnie J. Posted November 15, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 15, 2013 Many, many years ago, when you tendered to a dock across from the Radison as there was no port then, we were told to walk in the MIDDLE of the street. We were walking into town. This was so no one could pull you into an alley. There were 4 of us and we did walk in the middle of the road!
Gillimay Posted November 16, 2013 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2013 Cave-tubing.com was great. Miles Picked us up at port, gave us the history of area as we drove out of town on ac bus where we cave tubed and zip lined. Lunch was included and they had us back in plenty of time. We even got to,taste the local cashew wine. U have choices with them and we split our tour between the two activities but u could do just cave tubing if u want. We paid 1/2 of what it would have cost going thru royal. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
