Tourist traps and scams?

Exorbitant prices at the Tourist Village LOL. But then that's true for all shops in all crusie port complexes.

Most private vendors for excursions in Belize are very good and are not out to rip you off. That said, always be vigilant and do see if the company has reviews by others on the web. Taxis outside the Tourist Village are not metered so you need to agree on the charge before you get in. Also there are some "unlicensed"-for want of a better word-independent vendors who roam outside the Tourist Village and want to get you to tke their "excursions". Very difficult to gauge who is good or bad or if the excursion winds up being "lame". On the otherhand, the vendors in the flea market across fromt he Tourist Village are very friendly and usually honest and offer better prices on Belizean crafts than you'll find inside the T.V.. So don't let the somewhat aggressive excursion vendors mentioned previously dissuade you from crossing the stret tot he flea market, if you are looking for local crafts.

Take a look at what Shoreexcursioner offers. We booked cave tubing in Belize and an Ecotour in Roatan with them so we go a small discount on each.

They booked us with cavetubing.bz in Belize. It was my 4th time cave tubing and by far the best. cavetubing.bz used vans instead of old school buses and had newer, more comfortable tours. A good lunch was included and our guides, Robin and Alfredo, were exceptional. They shared much more information about Belize on the van as well as the vegetation as well as we passed on our walk to the tubing entry site.

In Roatan they used South Shore Canopy which offers both a zipline and an Ecotour offer hanging bridges. We did the Ecotour which we enjoyed primarily because our guide imparted a lot of knowledge about the trees and plants and the traditional remedies that they were used for.
