Explorer Boarding at Bayonne questions

Recommended Posts

I understand you have to take a shuttle from the port to the ship. How do they handle ppl in wheelchairs? My mom will not have a wheelchair with her bc she is having a scooter on board rented so it will be in her cabin. On other cruise lines out of NY the porters had a wheelchair waiting and they wheeled her through checkin and onto the ship so she just has to walk to her cabin with her cane. Also what do they do about babbies in strollers?? My daughter will have a step 2 car I push her in instead of a stroller. Wil I have to check that at the corn and carry her and my carry ons?

It probably would be a good idea to notify special needs department that you need a wheel chair at check in if you have not already done so. I am sorry I do not know what kind of carrier/stroller you are talking about with your child so can't help you there. As previous poster stated, the bus is wheel chair accessible (has a lift) The ride from the check in area to the ship itself is probably 1 minute.

If you're driving to Cape Liberty and parking, tell the guys directing traffic that you need a handicapped drop off and they will tell you where to pull in. Keep everyone in the car and get out and look for a RCL employee and tell them you need a wheelchair. Once you have the wheelchair, then let folks out of the car. You can contact special needs, but there is really no communication between RCI corporate and the folks actually working the embarkation.

You then continue driving down the tent and make a left and a left to get to the parking, which you prepay. My advice would be to drive half way through the first lot and make a left towards the gap in the chain link fence where you can cross to the parking lot on the terminal side. There is both regular and handicapped parking in this lot.

What time of year are you doing this? Cape Liberty is basically outdoors before you go through security, so it can be cold.

you can take the push car on the bus as well. We always take DD's stroller and we had no problems folding it up and getting it on the bus. Someone may have to stand on the bus while holding it, but the bus ride it literally 2 minutes.....

My DW (aka The Boss) uses a scooter and we bring it with us. As was posted before, tell the man directing traffic at the drop-off that you need a handicapped chute to drop your luggage and Mom off there, find a RCI person and tell them you need a wheelchair. We unload our scooter and

The Boss heads to the inside for shelter, if needed, and waits for me to park the car. We then check in together after that we queue up for the bus and get in the right line where one of the boarding folks puts us into the front of the buss via a ramp that the driver deploys and this is reversed at the ship and at debarkation. If RCI assigns you a wheelchair escort they will take you to the WindJammer, or any other public area, where you can wait to get into your cabin. Then someone, or Mom, can go to the cabin and get the scooter. I have had sucess peeking my head into the corridor early ans asking if I might get the scooter (and that is ALL I do) run it to The Boss and we start having some fun running people down (NO WE DON'T). If Mom has never used a scooter go to the grocery store or Wal-Mart and try one out.

Enjoy your cruise and have a ball on a great ship.
