Cane Garden Bay Beach via Celebrity Excursion - Anyone there in 2013?

Hi everyone,

Our family is going to Tortola in April for a stop on the Celebrity Summit. I'm interested in the Tortola Beach Break excursion offered by Celebrity. Has anyone been to this beach recently? Just looking for feedback on this beach and/or the excursion itself.

Thanks so much,

Amanda

Believe me, since it's the main beach for cruise excursions everyone will be there with you.

CGB hasn't changed too much in several years so the current threads are helpful. You see a little of Tortola on the way but with an excursion you don't see as much, and you don't get a chance to stop and see the views. Taking one of the tours from the drivers at the port includes that as well a a stop at CGB or Brewers.

Here's a brief description of the beaches in case you want to look at alternative beaches as well.

Have a great day!

Amanda I am on the cruise with you. As Bluew water suggests, you can easily do this by cab on your own and on your own timetable..... Open air cabs are readily available and they will get you back to the port on time. Just allow yourself the right amount of time....(ie leave by 12:30)

Half the ship will probably be there so it will be easy to figure out when to leave and you can share a cab back.....

My group might even be there.....although we will probably go to either brewers bay or long bay.....

We stay at Myett's in CGB which is where you are dropped off and picked up. Several safari taxis will arrive when it's time to return to port so no worries there. If you make arrangements with a driver for a short tour before the beach the driver will tell you where to look for him at a certain time.

As cherylroslin said, just din't enjoy your time there too much and lose track of time (unless you decide to stay and get a room at Meytt's :D)

Hope you all have a great day on Tortola!

  • 2 weeks later...

We spent a the day at Cane Garden Bay Beach last Monday and would definitely go back. We decided to do this on our own rather than booking the cruise ship excursion and were very glad we did. Much less expensive and we were able to spend a little longer at the beach. Shared "cab" (bus) was $8 per person each way and easily obtained right at the port. The drive over the mountain was fun (narrow roads, tight turns and great views -- drivers slowed at top so we could take quick pictures). Public entrance to the beach had restroom facilities as well as several vendors selling island trinkets/clothes. The vendors were not aggressive or pushy. Beach chairs and umbrellas were easily obtained ($15 for 2 chairs and an umbrella). We arrived around 9:30 and beach was still very quiet. Several bars along the beach for drinks and there are also also a couple of restaurants which will serve take out food ($10 for plate of jerk chicken, salad, and peas and rice) if you do not wish to go in and sit at the table. Beach was busy by 1 pm but we left around 2:30 so really weren't bothered by "too many people." Easy to get ride back to port. Would not hesitate to go again!

Does anyone know how long the cab ride is from cruise ship area to GCB? Do you have to wait for a bus or cab to fill up, or can you ask for private transportation? Also, which are the resorts that offer loungers/umbrellas and MOST IMPORTANTLY service on the beach? ;). Thanks for any other information.

Give yourself about 30 minutes to get back. There will be plenty of taxi's waiting at the beach to take cruisers back to port. They usually leave as they fill up. You won't have any problem getting a ride back whenever you are ready.

When you are dropped off there, it isn't a resort but a beach with a handful of vendors for both food and souvenirs. There will be someone available to rent the chairs and umbrellas.

It's a wonderful place for a beach day!

I would park to the left of Myett's or Stanley's (now cousin Tony's), great drinks and fish tacos and burgers and not quite as crowded toward the cemetery.

You'll see several of the larger taxis line up to take the ship excursion folks back, and there will be taxis stopping in for a little while after. You can also have a private taxi if you want to stretch your time there. Just ask at Myett's if Sandman would be available and get a price (depends on the # of ppl).

Have fun!

Thank you both very much! I think this will be our day and we'll play it by ear as far as cabs go/filling up etc. As long as there are plenty, we'll be fine! This area came highly recommended by our friend who lives in STT and sails quite often to Tortola. So looking forward to it - thanks again. :)

Just a quick note that CGB is the most crowded and lively beach on Tortola and is the only beach at which taxis drop off hundreds of cruisers at once. There are less crowded (and nicer) beaches like Brewers Bay with 1 beach bar and Smuggler's Cove with no amenities if you want less of the Lido deck vibe. Otherwise enjoy your day in CGB! :)
