Just wondering which city is best for a hotel night before cruise and any ideas of a good one that may be near a store or such for soda. We want to be closer to the pier instead of at the airport and going to the port the morning of.

I stayed at the Quality Inn in La Porte. A very easy ten minute ride to the port. There was a Kroger grocery store about one mile from the hotel. It is a very nice spot if you have a veheicle. Enjoy your cruise, we had a blast.

We enjoyed the La Porte Candlewood Suites, if you're driving they have free parking. If you're not, a big Kroger is across the street.

Shuttle to port was 20 but that covered both of us (and both ways). Waffle House is next door.
