elainmir Posted January 26, 2014 #26 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Hubby has to dress more formal for work as do I, so when we are on vacation we do not dress for formal nights..we do enjoy seeing others dressing up and having a great time. poison7fl Posted January 26, 2014 #27 Share Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) Heck, I don't even bring Pants anymore... Too much of a production. I just want to enjoy all of my vacation, and not have to waste 3-4 hours of getting ready, sitting down, and waiting for dinner.....and the food does not impress me, I am simple. We have a ball sitting on the Lido deck having dinner, watching TV, playing cards, talking with the staff, etc. in T shirt and shorts! I suggest new cruisers experience Cruise Elegant Nights, but I'm over it. Edited January 26, 2014 by poison7fl
Amyracecar Posted January 26, 2014 #28 Share Posted January 26, 2014 My Mum and Dad went on the Carnival Legend last year for a British Isles cruise. They love dressing up and felt totally over-dressed in a tux and gown. As we were going on the Valor later in the year they advised us not to dress up too much on Carnival ships so my Husband took just a smart suit and I took less formal dresses. I guess it must come down to the ship and people on board though, because it turned out to be one of the dressiest formal nights I've witnessed! At least half of the people sailing were from Purto Rico and they put the rest of us to shame with sparkly ballgowns and glamour. Us poor European girls just can't compete, they looked amazing. So yeah, you just never know. :) Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
sarafinadh Posted January 26, 2014 #29 Share Posted January 26, 2014 We love to dress. Just off the Inspiration, the longer entry level 4 night LA to Ensenada cruise. On 'Elegant Evening' I wore a long black velvet sheath, Himself was in black and white, although not a tux. We danced in Rhapsody before dinner to the piano music, and then had drinks in the Casino and gambled while we waited for our table. I felt as if I were channeling Vesper ; -) It was great fun! samiam0403 Posted January 26, 2014 #30 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Do you still dress up for it? Have you ever dressed up for it? Yes and yes. :) I spend all my working hours in a uniform and combat boots, so I definitely get 'girly' on cruises and thoroughly enjoy 'formal night' or 'elegant night' or whatever they call it this week. And I dress up on every other night as well. :)
asalligo Posted January 26, 2014 #31 Share Posted January 26, 2014 I do still dress up and I just bought a new tux with tails for my Feb cruise.

m8140 Posted January 26, 2014 #33 Share Posted January 26, 2014 My husband usually wears a nice suit that is very formal like and I wear long gowns on the formal nights and my son wears a nice formal suit also. I don's care what other people think . i think you should always look nice for the dining room. But I have seen people come in blue jeans when it states no blue jeans. i wear nice dresses on the other nights. I believe if you want to wear blue jeans go to the buffet. cruiselover5461 Posted January 26, 2014 #34 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Yes we still dress up. Hubby insist on wearing his tux so I go along on first formal second more casual but still dressy.
lola61 Posted January 26, 2014 #35 Share Posted January 26, 2014 You bet I do. Don't care what anyone else is dressed like. I ROCK :) and enjoy my evening :D Y\ I own my own tux, and I always loved dressing up for formal night and the Captains Gala Cocktail Party. Some of my fondest cruise memories was dancing on the stage with my wife, and sometimes my daughter while she was growing up. I have to admit, since the party in the lounge is gone, with the band playing... the dancing... the free drinks and hors d'oeuvres... Its just not the same for me... Dressing up now, just to stroll the atrium and get 1 dollar off my drink... Just doesn't seem like its worth all the fuss. I get that its a great day for photos, but as a professional photographer myself, I rarely buy the ship's photos. Do you still dress up for it? Have you ever dressed up for it? ARI421 Posted January 26, 2014 #36 Share Posted January 26, 2014 My husband and I dress up! He owns a tux I wear gowns, it's called formal night for a reason in my mind! Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
asalligo Posted January 26, 2014 #37 Share Posted January 26, 2014 I like to dress formal anyway though, I will have a tie and jacket on for dinner every night.
h_blond2 Posted January 26, 2014 #38 Share Posted January 26, 2014 We never eat in the MDR when we cruise. We just can't see the point of packing nice clothes when all we really want to do is stay in our shorts and get a tan! We don't have a problem eating at the buffet, but to each his own! I say that if you want to wear your tux, go for it! Who cares what everyone else is wearing! And please don't think that I'm a backwoods bumpkin because I don't want to dress up...I love to dress up, but on a cruise I just love to wear my bathing suit and shorts! KPfromCT Posted January 26, 2014 #39 Share Posted January 26, 2014 DESPISE dressing "UP" on vacation. We do the bare minimum to get by. Sundress for me, and either polo or button down and khakis for DH.:D:D:D
rsavage7 Posted January 26, 2014 #40 Share Posted January 26, 2014 My husband and teenage boys usually wear a suit and tie. I were a cocktail dress. My boys grumble and change right after dinner but I love to see them dressed up and it is a great chance to get a family picture!
Webb of Joy Posted January 26, 2014 #41 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Ever since they've taken what was a special night and dumbed it down, it's no longer like going "to the ball". It's more like going to the mall, so the best we do is jacket and tie, and dress. You wear a jacket and tie to the mall ?

carrieluvsgreg Posted January 27, 2014 #43 Share Posted January 27, 2014 We have gone more casual over the past 10 years of cruising, but not because of carnival or any other guests... It because I have decided that high heels on open decks aren't a good idea for me and I really just want to be comfortable. That said, we still dress up, just have come up with some dresses and flats that work for me. (And my husband, who is the ONLY person that I'm concerned with impressing. ) he has taken jackets on some trips, shirt and ties on others (and polos and dockers, too...) I don't pay that much attention to others, but I still see gowns and tuxes. It seems like longer trips have more people who get more dressed up. One of the things we love about carnival is that you can get as dressed up as you'd like or be more casual, it's up to you. I don't know why someone would feel "out of placed" dressed up if it's what they want to wear. Dress up, dress down- it's up to you, it's your vacation. jiggs Posted January 27, 2014 #45 Share Posted January 27, 2014 for the first time in years, the Tux may stay in the closet. I'm packing for next week, but reading here and my experiences over the last couple years makes me question if it makes sense. I like to get dressed up, but I don't like to be one of only a handful dressed to the nines. I don't care what others wear, but I almost feel like wearing a tux sticks out as much as the guys in their 'good jeans' and western shirts for 'elegant' night. billys5764 Posted January 27, 2014 #46 Share Posted January 27, 2014 My wife and I always dress up for elegant/formal night(s). I bring my tux and change out ties and cummerbunds. We like to have a drink in a quiet bar and then go to dinner. After dinner the tux comes off before I go in the smoke-filled casino. We always get comments from other passengers about how nice we look. Actually, it's more about how nice the Mrs. looks!
jamscckmc Posted January 27, 2014 #47 Share Posted January 27, 2014 On my first Carnival cruise in 2009 I was not prepared for how casual the dress was. Having been on Princess, Celebrity and RC where shorts are not allowed in the MDR for dinner and most dress up for formal nights we were over dressed. It seemed like putting on long pants was considered elegant for the men. My DH was one of very few in a suit. We are among those of you that dress nicely every night just like we would to a nice restaurant. To each his own, it is your vacation but it would be nice if everyone at least followed the guidelines. They are the only line I've been on that allow shorts for dinner. It does state no tank tops or ball caps yet some wear those anyway. Love looking at men's underarm hair while I'm eating, YUM!
silverpenguin Posted January 27, 2014 #48 Share Posted January 27, 2014 I wonder if it's kind of like the express lane at Walmart...sure, the sign SAYS you can't have more than 20 items, but you can come up with 2 shopping carts and our manager says we can't turn you away. So yes the guidelines SAY to dress a certain way, but if you don't they won't turn you away.
Hawkwynd Posted January 27, 2014 #49 Share Posted January 27, 2014 Sport jacket, no tie... I hate ties so not going to wear one on vacation  I completely understand and respect those that want to dress to the nines, whatever is fun for you!!
