seashinesunshine Posted February 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2014 Hi! We are stopping in San Juan on a Holland America cruise. We are traveling with my mother who is in a wheelchair. Any ideas for a wheelchair accessible outing in San Juan? Thanks for any ideas! Going thru the old city could be tricky in a chair since the port is downhill and the forts are uphill. What I would suggest is to go thru the lower area, if you go off to the left in the direction of the entrance to the bay, there is a wonderful flat wide sidewalk the goes along the old city wall. It is such a pretty walk, no shade however. There are street vendors etc on the way. Then you could take a taxi up hill to the forts. Once again nice wide flat sidewalks. I'm not sure how much of the fort is chair friendly, but for sure the main levels are, doorways are wide and there is shade there. The sidewalk between the forts is also wide and fairly flat. When you are done in the upper area you can take a taxi back down. It would be easy to get a taxi and if your mother can get in and out of her chair to get in and out of a taxi that would be great. If she is more limited, you can find a taxi that will call a taxi that can carry a chair with the person in it. You may need to just wait a bit for it since traffic can be awful. If someone is with you that is strong and comfortable pushing a chair uphill, you can do some shopping too. It is a climb to push the chair all the way to the forts though. Fort San Cristobel I know has an elevator for some of the levels, I can't remember if El Morrow does. We took an elevator to the level this tunnel is on, it was slightly uphill as you go thru the tunnel, but as you can see it is level and wide.
