watching ships leave from FLL

Where can we go to watch the ships leave from the canal? I know there is land twoardd the end of the canal that people watch the ship's leave. How do we get there?

I'm sure there's public beach access further north, but the closest access is the private beach at the Lago Mar Resort. We're staying there in May and plan to walk down to the canal entrance.
