Cabfare to Belize Zoo?

My DW and I are looking to do the Belize Zoo on our own. Admittance costs $15 pp...I understand the Zoo is about an hour from the cruise ports, is that correct? Can anyone give insight on the cost of a cab fare to and back from the Zoo? We are trying to see if the excursion through Norwegian is worth doing ($99 pp), or if we would be better off doing it on our own.

Since Belize taxis don't have meters, my guess is ~ $75-$100 RT for the taxi , not pp if you have the driver wait for you (say 1-2 hours at the zoo). Might be on the high side.

 

If you take a taxi, make sure it has the green taxi tags and be clear with the driver before getting into the taxi where you want to go and the total cost. Be sure he understands you want him to wait. No language barrier as Belize is a former British colony. But if he's a friendly sort and gives you a nice running commentary to and from, ask him to take you to a nice local place for lunch on the way back and buy his too.

I don't think my DW would like that very much...Most likely she probably wouldn't feel very safe trusting the driver.
