We're staying at the Embassy Suites Westshore for a couple of days prior to our cruise and I'd like to pick up bug spray, sun tan lotion, etc there, rather than carry on the plane. Are there any grocery or CVS type stores in that area?

Yes there is a Walgreens on the same side of the street 3 blocks south of your hotel on the corner of Westshore and Kennedy. You also have a mall across the street from your hotel.
