Lima Airport to Lima--dangerous ride?

We've read that between the Lima airport and city there have been incidents of muggings of taxi passengers. Anyone know of this happening?

Happens rather frequently. BUT it also happens because people just walk outside the airport and get into the first cab they see. And a lot of those "cabs" are not regulated cabs in the least-just some thug with a car. Getting in the first "cab" you see or allowing the first tout you see to guide you to a cab is an ABSOLUTE NO NO.

I fly into/out of Lima at least 4 times per year for business. Most of the time I make arrangements with my hotel to send a car. The driver will come inside and have a board with your name on it (meet and greet service which doesn't generally cost extra when you have the hotel make the arrangements-a lot of the hotels send the cars for free just due to the safety issue). Otherwise, ONLY use the taxi dispatcher INSIDE the airport to make car arrangements. The stand is just to your left after you clear Customs.
