Key West | Freeport | Nassau...things to do within walking distance

My family and I are going on a Carnival Dream cruise to Key West, Freeport, and Nassau.

We never do anything other than shop for about 5 minutes in the shops when we go on cruises. We've never been on a cruise that goes to the Bahamas, only Mexico because we are from Southern California.

So I'd like to know what we can do other than shop close to the ship. Any beaches within walking distance??? Or really anything else you suggest? My family isn't the type that likes to explore. The farthest we've gone from the ship in a port was that time we took a taxi thing to the Walmart in Puerto Vallarta to buy water. And even then my mother was complaining because everything was in Spanish...

Suggestions?

In Nassau, there is a free beach within walking distance, probably 10-15 minutes walk. It is Junkanoo. There are restrooms, and food and beverages for sale as well as beach chairs for rent.

The straw market is a must do, at least once. It is a series of shops all hawking the same things, mostly inexpensive bags, t-shirts, jewelry, shell items.

There is a rum factory you can walk to (again 15 minutes) John Watlings for a free tasting and tour of the facility.

Never been to Key West or Freeport....

There are other threads in this area about things to do, but we are going back to Nassau and are going to try the Pirates Museum and Adastra Gardens. Some other things I have read about are the Graycliff Cigar making and chocolate tour (that is close enough to the pier to walk to as is the Pirate Museum). We plan on taking the jitney (bus) to Adastra Gardens which is a small zoo. There is also a Fish Fry near the zoo that I have heard is good.

There is a link to Nassau that you can explore on your own.

Thanks to the above poster. Does anyone else have any ideas? Or maps I can look at?

In key west you dock right downtown so lots of opportunities to walk around and shop or do a pub crawl. In Freeport there isn't much to do in the immediate area; some small shops , a Fat Tuesday bar and a señor frogs bar; everything else you need to take a taxi to port lucaya for resorts and shopping. We just got back from all 3 ports last week- feel free to ask any questions!

In Key West, walk to Duvall Street. I love listening to the various types of music from the bars and the food, particularly at Sloppy Joe's is great!

Nassau offers some free walking tours - you can probably google those. The ones I have are on my computer and I can't seem to upload. I also have maps of Nassau and Key West - same thing. If anyone can tell me how to upload, I will do it!

Regardless, if you get off the ship in Nassau, and after you walk through the terminal security building (long walk in the heat to the building, so wear be sure your mom wears a hat and walking shoes), the waterfront is right there on the right with water taxis you can take, or you can grab a cab up to Atlantis and play in the casino, or walk to the end of that street by the water, and you will run right into the straw market and then Senor Frogs. If you walk through the straw market, on the other side are the usual cruise shops.

Key West: Easy to shop and walk around. Fun & interesting place to be.

Nassau: Pretty beaches (you can walk to some or take an inexpensive taxi) and you'll be docked right in town for shopping.

Freeport: It's an about a $5 taxi ride to a beach area. The terminal area now has more shopping than it once did.

Have a great cruise! :)

Isn't the straw market right by the area where the ship docks? IIRC, there isn't really a way to avoid the straw market?

It's actually now about three/four blocks away ... not in the center of town where it once was years ago.

Thanks everyone. I think at Key West we can just walk around because everything is close as you said; in Nassau we can hopefully walk to the beach, and at Freeport we can just shop or maybe take a taxi into the town. Thanks for the suggestions!
