CAS and FCC

Did rules change?

I just went to book a cruise in September on the Star and told them to use my FCC. I was told that because it was a comped cruise I had to pay the full amount due now and they would also apply the FCC.

In the past, I was able to apply the FCC to the cruise and pay the balance due when it was due.

Did rules change or is this CAS rep wrong?

Thanks!

It took me awhile to figure it out, because no one explains anything. I thought the same thing the first time they tried to charge me in full when I booked. But the rules have not changed. After multiple calls and speaking with several supervisors, I finally figured it out: If it is a FULL comp, you must pay in full when it is booked. If however you take even the tinyest, slightest upgrade, you can use the FCC as a deposit and pay remainder at final payment. So now, when I am booking far out, I almost always upgrade for just this reason. On my upcoming cruise, I was comped an aft penthouse. If I took that, I was obligated to pay fullt axes/port fees immediately. Instead I "upgraded" to a forward penthouse, which I didnt particularly want, for - are you ready - $35. more per person. But because it was an "upgrade" I only needed to use by FCC and full payment isnt due til next March....

PS. Every once in a while I get someone who wants to charge me full amount even when I do an upgrade. They are wrong, so if that happens, press the issue.

Agreed. If you take a full comp as-is, you pay the full taxes now. If you upgrade (mini to suite, for example), you pay a deposit now and the balance at Final Payment date.

It's only when you confirm the offer they extend, that you have to pay the balance immediately.
