Canada Line question

Recommended Posts

I am trying to see how much it would be to take the Canada Line train vs a cab. Is the mandatory $5 charge included in the price or is it an additional $5 a ticket?

Considering the fare to downtown is $4 at Peak times or $2.75 Offpeak... the $5 surcharge is not included in the ticket price!

It's only a one-way (inbound from the airport) fee however; if your cruise is one-way and you just need to get to the airport you'll never pay it.

You can also strategically avoid it for a short while at least by purchasing a 10-pack of prepaid 'Faresaver' tickets at the airport Pharmacy - if you're traveling in a group this can save money even if you never use transit again. $21 for 10 tickets (1 zone - good anywhere Offpeak) or $31.50 (2 zone - good for YVR-Downtown any time) vs. $7.75 per person Offpeak/$9pp Peak for cash fares.

Peak = Mon-Fri before 6:30pm

Offpeak = All day Sat/Sun/Holidays, M-F 6:30pm>

A cab fare from YVR to Canada Place or the reverse will run you about $35 depending on traffic. Martin has mentioned the FareSaver booklet which permits you to avoid the $5 Airport Convenience Fee. However, the FareSaver option may not be available when you arrive as transit is supposed to be discontinuing the sale of the tickets and introducing a prepaid cash card type system sometime this spring or summer which will eliminate the opportunity to avoid the Airport fee with FareSaver tickets. That said the Airport fee is only paid on trips from YVR and not to YVR.

M-F until 6:30pm it's $4 (2 zones), after 6:30, or all day Sat-Sun $2.75 (1 zone)

On trips leaving the airport there is a $5 surcharge on single tickets (so $9/$7.75); no surcharge heading TO the airport.

Lastly, if you plan to travel using the Skytrain/Bus/Seabus system while in Vancouver or to head back to the airport after your cruise, you can buy a book of 10 tickets (2 zone) for $31.50. They're available at the 7-11 inside the airport, and has the benefit that there is no surcharge on these tickets. Just remember to validate them using the little silver box on the platform.

According to a report in the paper this morning, it would appear that our transit company's rollout of their new cash card program has been delayed so please ignore my remarks re the FairSaver books.
