mcquillian Posted June 27, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) An old topic that I wanted to revisit for 2014 - watch shopping . . . I am taking my family on the NCL Getaway in the Caribbean from August 2 returning to Miami on August 9th. We are scheduled to port in St. Phillipsburg/Saint Martin on Tuesday, August 5th. As an avid watch collector, I am planning on buying a unique present for myself while on the cruise. I realize that much has changed, and the deals may not be what they used to be, but for me, buying a watch is part of the actual experience that I enjoy. Yes, I could buy online, but to me, this will be a very special part of the trip . . . Below are a few links of some of the types of watches i am looking for. I was hoping that those who are watch fans as myself, and have been cruising recently, could give me a hand regarding where I may want to shop. Also curious if there are any "Caribean specific" watch models (Tag Heuer used to produce a few) out there that I may want to consider. I'm general, I am interested in Tag Heuer Aquaracer Quartz units, or possibly Oris TT1 Divers or the Oris Equis models. Here are a few examples of watches that I would be interested in looking at. I appreciate any feedback. http://www.authenticwatches.com/oris-tt1-divers-date-watch-73375338555rs.html#.U62gEom9LCR http://www.authenticwatches.com/oris-tt1-diver-64376098555rs.html#.U62gg4m9LCR http://www.authenticwatches.com/oris-aquis-date-divers-73376534155rs.html#.U62guIm9LCR http://www.authenticwatches.com/tag-heuer-aquaracer-wap1112-ba0831.html#.U62lNom9LCR I am so looking forward to this trip. I have recently survived beating cancer, and this trip with my wife and son will be very special for me. Thanks for reading. I appreciate your time and input. Thanks. I have never been to St Martin, but my husband LOVES watches and looks forward to the St Thomas shops. You should be stopping there if on the getaway. rvsullivan Posted June 28, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 28, 2014 I would suggest you do a search of these boards for a lot if information about buying jewelry/watches in the Caribbean. Most suggest that you can always have a better experience in buying from a reputable dealer at home. It seems you have very detailed information about the specifics of what you want? Given that, I will be surprised if you find a "deal" in the Caribbean that beats or matches what you can do at home. I assume you know how to spot fakes or understand the "gray market"? On the other hand, if the pleasure is from the shopping and not the purchase, you will plenty of opportunity. Good luck!

LrgPizza Posted June 28, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 28, 2014 Just an FYI - Philipsburg is the capital/main town of Sint Maarten, the dutch part of the island of St-Martin/St. Maarten. I didn't want you to think it was St. Phillipsburg. :-) I'm excited for you and your family, and congrats on beating that nasty C word!

Schasz Posted June 28, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 28, 2014 To the OP...Congrats for beating the dreaded C. We will be on the Getaway in October. Several years ago I purchased my Tag Link watch in St. Thomas. I had researched the price and felt I got a decent deal. Just for kicks today I went on the Tag website to see what the Link watch is going for now. Wow! I am happy I purchased it when and where I did. Good luck to you on your watch search I was pretty sure I was going to make my purchase on the cruise I was on years ago. It happened to be my youngest DD HS Graduation cruise. DevonianCruiser Posted June 28, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 28, 2014 Congrats, that great news :D As someone obsessed with watches (3 Rolex at present, but Omega and Breitling come and go) and have been to every shop on every island, St Thomas and St Martin have the best shops, though throughout most of the Caribbean there tends to be a similar discount wherever you go. It's always worth an extra haggle though as on a Hublot in DI (I think) the guy was so keen for the sale he went a lot lower. I've never used the company that you've linked there but their prices always seem very good. A few watch fans from the US that I've ended up talking to in passing in shops have often said that they can get better deals at home, so worth looking at sources there I'd suggest. That said the thrill of watch shopping in those islands must be as euphoric as women buying shoes :D:D:D Oops sorry ladies
