What are you/did you wear for your on-board ceremony?

My son and his fiancee are considering getting married next fall on Carnival, probably sailing out of New Orleans. She's interested in knowing what other brides/grooms, (particularly mid 30's second marriage type brides) have chosen to wear for the ceremony. She's not a satin ballgown type girl and wonders if a simple ivory gown and pants and vest will be sufficient or if the whole traditional formal garb is going to be needed. There won't be a wedding party per se, just parents of both and their combined children (all 11 of them lol).

I am 52 years old and getting married in 2 weeks on Carnival Imagination. My daughter and step daughter are our matrons of honor, so I think I qualify as the older type....I chose not to wear white. I am wearing pink. I found a bridesmaid dress from David's Bridal that I liked a lot and chose that. This is the dress I chose http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Sleeveless-Short-Mesh-Dress-with-Side-Cascade-F15612_Bridal-Party-Bridesmaids-All-Bridesmaid-Dresses in the color ballet. My girls are wearing dresses in the color wine and my fiancé is wearing a gray suit with a tie that matches my dress, and our sons-in-law are the groomsmen and are wearing gray slacks, white shirts, and wine ties. The girls are also wearing flip flops with their dresses. They chose different styles because my stepdaughter is super tiny and went with strapless, my daughter unfortunately inherited her bustline from me and can't do strapless, but they both chose fairly casual sundress type dresses, also from David's Bridal....since it is a second marriage for both of us we didn't want to go too formal for the ceremony and chose to spend the bulk of our money on the cruise itself.

No need to worry about tradition ...It is his and her day. they should wear whatever they feel most comfy with. I am wearing a short dress (just to my knees) and DF is wearing a Tux with converse sneakers. Just tell them to be them and go with what feels right for them.:D

I was a forty something bride - first marriage for me, but not for DH. I didn't want a ballgown, but still wanted to feel like a bride. He wanted to wear a tux and go very formal. Here's what we ended up with..

There's no wedding dress code on the ships. My wife and I had ballgowns and went more formal, but a couple other brides I've seen had something very simple (but beautiful) from Bloomingdales or other department stores.

I've also seen grooms everywhere from hawaiian shirt and khakis (for a March embarkation wedding in Baltimore) to a tux. It's really whatever makes them comfortable and happy.

Happy planning!

The only advice I would give is to keep in mind how you will pack and/or transport whatever you decide on, especially if you are flying to your port. Nowadays, airlines are more and more strict about carry on rules, I can't even imagine having the put a wedding gown in checked luggage. And once you get onboard, keep in mind the small cruise ship closets.

Most airlines will say they will work with you, especially if you let them know ahead of time.

I have found excellent advice online on how to transport your gown.

Here is one article: http://flyawaybride.com/how-to-transport-your-wedding-dress/

Also there is now a company that does dress preservation who will help you with packing and pressing for free if you are using them to preserve the dress of for a fee possibly otherwise:

One of the reasons I did not go with a satin skirted dress though was to reduce wrinkle issues with transport.

mrstriceasnice - you dress is beautiful, so romantic. I think it's a great choice. If you don't elect the packing and pressing service, think about brining a small travel steamer. (But be sure to get one that doesn't have a heating element). I bought one for my wedding cruise, and now I never cruise without it. My dress travelled really well, and a quick touch up with the steamer was all it needed. It is great with even the most delicate fabrics.

The one I have was about $25 and looks a bit like the one below...
