my wife is unable to walk long distances, and uses a mobility scooter (PRIDE Jet3 ultra) for that reason... she is concerned specifically about embarkation day on the Carnival Magic out of Galveston... any one with experience care to comment? do persons in power scooters enter the ship on the same gangway that persons in wheel chairs use? or do they enter the ship at a different level?

we have rented a mobility scooter which was delivered to the ship and was waiting in our room when we boarded, but have never taken our own before...

In Galveston, generally everyone boards the ship on the same deck.

A couple of tips:

  • Going up the gangway depending on the angle of it the scooter may have to be placed on high speed. Make certain that there is plenty of distance between the scooter and the people in front so there's enough room to stop. Remember scooters do not stop on a stop rather it's a rolling stop. The higher the speed the longer the roll distance needed to stop.
  • Depending on the clearance level of the scooter and the angle of the gangway the scooter can on occasion get a little hung up on the connecting joints. If this happens , if your wife can stand up have her get off the scooter place it in freewheel mode and roll it over the connecting joint. Or just slightly lift the scooter over the connecting joint. Do NOT give the scooter a hard push while your wife it is on it and the scooter is in drive mode as the motor can lock up and can even become damaged.
  • If you have a Pride GoGo and the motor should lock up there is a little bubble on the battery case where the charger gets connected that is actually the reset button. Turn the scooter off, make certain it's in drive mode and push the reset button. and than turn the scooter on. This may have to be done a couple times until the battery resets. If you have another manufacturer's model you'll have to check the owner's manual to see if there's a reset button.
  • Make certain the scooter is placed back into drive before your wife gets back on the scooter. Travel Portable size scooters such as a Pride Go Go tend to only have a 2" clearance. Full size scooters with larger tires generally do not have this problem
  • Not that anything is going to happen I always recommend that the individual print the copy of the trouble shooting instructions from the owner's manual and take it with you.

WIth this said scooter are driven aboard regularly with little to no issues.

Sorry, just noticed that you stated your wife has a PRIDE Jet3 ultra. The PRIDE Jet3 Ultra is a Power Chair and not a Scooter so there is a some difference in clearance due to the design and size of wheels. Generally there's not clearance issues with this type of chair but can occur depending on the angle of the gangway. However it's still recommended that you take a copy of the Trouble Shooting Instructions found in the owners manual.
