6 of us Posted July 30, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 30, 2014 I have never been to Grand Turk, can you compare it to Nassau, Free port, a private island? What is it like & what is there to do? Are the beaches in walking distance? Thanks for all the info everyone! I appreciate it!
cruiseapril Posted July 30, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2014 Hi- There is a Grand Turk Forum. Grand Turk is unique, IMO, as it has a cruise port with a beach, big pool, and Margaritaville AND it also has a small town which is like the old Caribbean. We took a taxi ($5 pp) into town and walked around and went to the museum, then spent the afternoon at the pier pool and beach. The island is small- and known for diving and snorkeling. Loucat Posted July 31, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 31, 2014 Put Grand Turk turnism in a search engine. You will find an island map that helps to see what is there. At the port, there is a growing area with shops, restaurants and a very large pool. Once leaving the port, is is somewhat rural although nice with beaches on the one side of the island; the other side is rocky. The end of the island is Cockburn Town where there is a lighthouse and a few shops. It is a small island and cannot be compared to Nassau. Right at the port there is a beach that looks pretty nice! DocF Posted July 31, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 31, 2014 (edited) The port is a highly developed commercial area with the same kind of attractions that are available at cruise ports all over the Caribbean. The rest of the island is still much like the Caribbean was before the wave of tourists brought about the modernization and sanitizing of the whole experience. It is the place that run away grand parents go. Visit Jack's Shack or another local joint for a unique experience. mrsfuzzmo Posted July 31, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 31, 2014 I think it's similar in feel to a private island, in that the port area is primarily going to be everyone from your ship. It's different in that the drinks, food, etc. are NOT included in your cruise fare as is on most private islands. The feel is similar, the price is not! :) Yes, you can venture off the port "facility" area to see more of the island, but in general, I think most people stick close to port because of the nice beach that is right there and the accessibility of not only the Pool, shops, restaurants right there, but the local establishments just down the beach. The beach is very nice, beautiful blue clear water and great sandy bottom. It's literally at the end of the dock.
Avalon35 Posted September 10, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 10, 2014 What is your opinion of the Hop on Hop off bus tours offered by the cruiseline? Can you do this on your own? Is it worth it?
