Contacting Australia from Japan

I would like some advice from Aussies who have been to Japan on the best way to contact home whilst we are in Japan.

Would it be better to rent a phone or use my iPad to send emails or Viber using the wifi available on the ship or at the hotel.

I would appreciate answers from those of you who have done this already.

Thanks.

Hi, I'm not Aussie but I've just been to Japan. Here is what I did...

The easiest way for me to communicate to people back home in Canada was by sending emails from my iPhone using Wifi where it was available - from the hotel and on the ship.

In Japan, free wifi it is not widely available (it is for the Japanese on their carriers as you'll see wifi signs all over the place). Some ports of call had free wifi and I made use of that too.

Another tip, you can get free wifi from Starbucks in Japan, but you have to register your email and password from a normal computer, so do this whilst back home (you cannot use your iPad to do this when you are there).

Cheers.
