Baltic cruises without St. Petersburg

The very recent (and on-going) mystery submarine incursion into Swedish waters has raised the level of tensions and security in the Baltic. The prevailing theory is that the submarine was Russian. The search is continuing, but not a positive sign. We'll take a pass - with or without St. Petersburg. A lot of other places on our list and we have booked one in the U.S.

I don't think anyone booking a Baltic / St Petersburg cruise should be concerned about security issues. I recommend this itinerary to all of my friends without hesitation.

In Europe, certainly outside of Sweden, it's seen as an amusement - not a source of tensions. ;)

There are suggestions that it may be Danish, suggestions that there's no submarine at all. If it is, it's most certainly a midget one. possibly researching the lie-of-the-land, possibly a training exercise. But probably testing Sweden's alertness, hence Sweden's mobilisation of resources in response

If it's Russian - and it is detained - no-one's going to start WW3.

Russia will be embarrassed, Sweden will see it as a one-up and will make political capital out of it. The crew will be detained for a short while til the publicity dies down, then sent home in shame to re-generate the publicity.

And the rest of Europe will be quietly saying "nice one, Sweden", with a wry grin.:D

But that's not going to happen. It's slipped away, and the search has been called off.

These mind-games have been going on for years.

And there are plenty of recent examples of allies found to be spying on each-other. Including US, UK and France.

Sorry, Mike, but to change cruising plans because of this incident?

Nah. Not in a million years.

JB :)
