Alaska formal nights

Help! I plan on wearing long gowns for formal nights on our Infinity June Alaska cruise - DH is renting a tux. I have had some people tell me (not on this board) that people just don't get that dressed up anymore, especially in Alaska which tends to be more casual. I have a friend that keeps saying, "I think you are going to be surprised when you realize people just don't get that dressed up anymore" (BTW - she has never cruised but has a friend who is getting ready to cruise Alaska in June. Also, we've never been to Alaska - our 1st cruise was a 4 day Bahama, I wore a long dress then and didn't feel out of place. Additionally, we are traveling with another couple, this will be the 3rd Alaskan cruise for the them - and I can tell they think that I'm going over the top when I told them that I am getting long gowns and DH is renting a tux. Help - are these people right - is Alaska less of a formal setting, should DH still rent a tux and I get my gowns? I don't want to feel out of place. But to me formal night means just that. Thanks for advice.

Hi , We were on the Infinity/Alaska in 2002. Both formal nights we saw men in tuxes & dark suits. The ladies wore everything from long beaded gowns to cocktail dresses & pantsuits. We are sailing to Alaska again SOON. I will be wearing a formal gown one night and a silk pantsuit suit with glitzy jewelry the second formal night. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful cruise. She is my favorite ship!!

It's not necessarily the destination that determines how "dressy" formal night is. It's the cruise line. Celebrity is dressier than Carnival, for instance. You'll see more tuxedos on Celebrity.

I am certainly not an expert. We are going to Alaska in August for our first cruise. I have two formal gowns to wear and I am buying DH a tux to wear. I don't really care how formal anyone else is or isn't. I want to have our pictures made and I want us to look really nice for them. From what I have read, there will be all kinds and I seriously doubt we will be the only ones in formal wear.

I say wear what YOU want to wear!

My husband will be wearing his tux, and I am bringing my long velvet gown this week, so I don't care if I'm the only one dressed formally. By God, I'm gonna get my money's worth from my dresses and my hubby's tux. Actually, we already own the dresses and tux, as we have Mardi Gras Balls and other formal events every year that we attend. I say wear the formal attire. As long as you are comfortable in it, go for it.

We never get a chance to dress up, living in such a casual city like Seattle. We're using the cruise to have an excuse to dress to the nines! And totally looking forward to it!!

Elaine...Celebrity (& HAL) cruisers are often a tad more 'traditional' than some of the other lines...so you will not be over the top with dressing up for formal night in a gown and your hubby in a tuxedo. We did a cruisetour of Alaska with HAL and many dressed to the nines for formal night even on an Alaskan cruise. So enjoy those formal nights and take pix of how wonderful you will both look!
Happy sailing!

Hubby and I went on the Celebrity Mercury Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise for our honeymoon 2 years ago. I wore formals and he wore a tux for formal nights. Most people were pretty dressed up. When people talk about Alaska being more casual..they are talking about DAYTIME..when you might be hiking a glacier or whale watching! I think you should do what suits YOU..if you like to get dressed up (as dh and I do) go for it! Hope this helps!

I agree with the other posters here. I have black fly-away pants and a beaded top to wear on our July Alaskan cruise. You know if it's formal night & your are dressed formally you can't be in the wrong! If others are not as formal, that is not going to spoil my fun! Have a great cruise. Shari

We did Alaska on Princess and found the formal nights to be no less formal than the Caribbean. Enjoy your cruise!

 • 4 weeks later...
We are going on Pricess in Sept. My DH will be taking his dark suit and I am taking long gowns, I figure it say formal and thats formal. For the semi formal , he will be taking a sport coat and I will probably take a pant suit or skirt and top, I would rather feel a tad overdressed than underdressed. But thats just me. Go for it enjoy yourself.
