pieshops Posted October 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2014 We will be doing this in December on our Jade Cruise. There is a great thread going on the Italy board, same basics apply to all countries. Check it out http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1925022
garycarla Posted October 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 21, 2014 Lots of variables depending on your carrier, home country, locked or unlocked phone, etc. FYI - while on the ship, SIM cards are not going to help. They still get $2.49 a minute.
Valen9 Posted October 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 22, 2014 Has anyone bought a new SIM card and used it on vacations? How did it work? And did ur reg phone company not effected? I did this several years ago. Assuming you are in the USA, the most important thing (well, other than having a GSM phone that uses a SIM card) is to make sure your phone is unlocked. You can get this done for free, assuming you own your phone or are past your initial contract period. Call your service provider (the one you're locked to), tell them you are traveling, and ask for a "courtesy unlock". Look up on the Internet how to unlock your style of phone, and use the code that your provider sends you. It may take a few days for them to send you the code, so don't wait until the last minute. If you have a Simple Choice plan from T-mobile, you may not need a new SIM. Just make sure you have enabled the International plans, and that you're going to one of the supported countries. You'll get free texts and 3G data. This is what I did for my international trips this year.
