moatenote Posted October 29, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) For our AMA cruise of the Douro River next September, we fly on Delta from Atlanta to Amsterdam and on to Lisbon. There is a 2 hour and 10 minute scheduled layover in Amsterdam. Is this enough time???? Edited October 29, 2014 by moatenote
rjscott Posted October 29, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2014 As long as your flight leaving Atlanta is not delayed, you should have plenty of time in Amsterdam. Schipol Airport is very efficient. We've had layovers there and had lots of extra time, as the security is at your gate, so you are only contending with the people on your flight, not the hoards at the entire airport or terminal. So, although the airport is huge, and it may take a bit of time to get to your gate from your first flight, check-in and security for your connecting flight should be fairly painless and quick. AZCruiserguy Posted October 29, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 29, 2014 And there is only one terminal building, so it's just a matter of how far you will need to walk between your arrival and departure gates.
deec Posted October 30, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2014 should be plenty of time But when we arrived from the US on our way to Budapest ( this was our FIRST entrance into the EU) we went through passport control and security in a general area very fast.....our luggage had been check through to Budapest. We were also able to bring duty free alcohol from US through Amsterdam and onto the next flight. When we LEFT Amsterdam for home they did security/passport check at the gate!!!! moatenote Posted October 30, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted October 30, 2014 Thanks to my fellow travelers for your information in helping us decide about these travel plans. I had forgotten that at the AMS airport, all security is done at the individual gates.
rudeman Posted October 30, 2014 #6 Share Posted October 30, 2014 I take it you want to fly Delta. If that's not necessarily the case, American/USAir flies seasonal non-stops from Charlotte to Lisbon! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
moatenote Posted October 30, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted October 30, 2014 I looked at US Air, but their planes from Charlotte to Lisbon don't have individual seat entertainment systems (just the big overhead movie screen) and no 2-seat rows (all at least 3 seats). Not exactly appealing for an 8-9 hour flight.
BSinPNS Posted November 8, 2014 #8 Share Posted November 8, 2014 Remember you do have to go through passport control. We had 1+10 transferring from DL to KLM going to Zurich. Lots of walking, but had plenty of time. No additional screening at the gate for us.
catskier Posted November 8, 2014 #9 Share Posted November 8, 2014 I just did it last week. It is tight. We were in economy comfort so off the plane before 200 other people. So that help. As others posted you do have to go through passport control ( can be a long line) as well as security at the gate. They were making sure all cords to electronic devices were out ( not just computers) camera, etc, it really was slowing down the process. This is more going into the US, not the other way around. It is doable, but be prepared to miss your flight if you have any delay. Sent from my iPad using Forums
