BOS_CruiseGuy Posted December 22, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2014 I am not sure if you are able to use US Dollars on Cozumel, especially at the bars on the east side. I have seen a few posts that say you 'can use $', but both the Mexican Peso and US Dollar use the '$' system. If you can use USD, is that better than exchanging for some Pesos? Thanks for the information.
maldenmusic Posted December 22, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 22, 2014 We used dollars 2 years ago when we were on the east side; we also bought t-shirts with dollars
bobnsons Posted December 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2014 They LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your dollars on the Eastside. :D
mrsfuzzmo Posted December 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 22, 2014 US$ and Mex. Pesos are both fine. The one thing you CANNOT use is Credit Cards! No CC machines on that side of the island to run your card. Use cash only.
wadethegringo Posted December 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Keep an eye on the exchange rate if you plan to spend a good amount of cash. Right now it is "1 USD equals 14.60 MXN". I have seen on the street most just do the 10-1 conversion.
CT Sean Posted December 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2014 In case you needed further confirmation, they gladly took my dollars in August.
JohninDC Posted December 22, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Bring lots of smaller bills - those bar tenders and cab drivers never seem to have change when you pull out a $20.
reney313 Posted December 22, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2014 Yes, East Side bars take dollars. If I recall correctly from the 2 bar hops there, they had the prices in USD. I imagine the exchange rate is probably better to use Pesos, but it is very easy to use dollars. The poster was correct who stated there are no credit card machines on that side of the island. All power is generator only. I suspect no internet or phone lines for the machines.
