Family Trasnportation between Vancouver and Seattle

Looking for suggestions on one way transportation for family of 5 adults and 4 teen age children (with luggage) from Vancouver Canada to Seattle Washington. Thanks in advance

With that many people and luggage, you really should consider taking the train from Vancouver.

Otherwise, with a one-way rental necessary, you could be facing a substantial charge from the rental company. Their rates for larger vans are quite high.

Hmm....

  • Are you looking at Seattle downtown? Or Seattle's airport?
  • Quick Shuttle at $50 is the simpliest. Cruise terminal pickup and drop off at SeaTac airport (or Seattle downtown).
  • Greyhound/Bolt Bus is a cheaper option downtown, but you need a cab to the bus terminal
  • Amtrak train is an option, but there are only two departures a day. If cruise ship docks in the morning, you need to kill time with your luggage until late afternoon. You also need a cab to the train terminal.
  • a more scenic option is to Orca whale watch your way to Seattle.

If Amtrak times work for you it would be my preference (book in advance and fares can be as low as $19pp).

Otherwise, assuming you have two adults who can drive, hiring two regular cars for a one-way will almost certainly be cheaper than a large van. As noted above, if one-way dropoff fees are in play the car rental option gets pricey - but there's enough demand for one-way rentals of regular cars that it's usually possible to get a c.$100 per car price from one of the major rental companies for a family car (check ALL companies, check often - too far in advance one-way fees are often assumed, but the closer to departure the more accurate the data on how many cars are needed where so the fees tend to disappear).

Bolt won't let you book until approx 6 weeks in advance - but you can go compare Greyhound (don't forget Companion Fare and other discounts) and Amtrak a year in advance.

And as SB mentioned, compare the price flying out of YVR - sometimes there's surprisingly little difference, other times it can be significant, but regardless it gives you a budget for the YVR-SEA transportation.
