If you want to be in the center of the action you generally want to be within or close to Ocean Drive, Collins, and Washington Avenues between roughly 5th and 15th Streets.

Hotel Victor is spectacular and right in the middle of everything... http://hotelvictorsouthbeach.com/

Loews is another great hotel... http://www.loewshotels.com/hotels/miamibeach/default.asp

If you want something less expensive try the oceanfront South Beach Marriott... http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MIAMB

Or the South Beach Courtyard, a few blocks in from the beach... http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MIACB

We stayed at the Clevlander a couple of years ago. great location and price, but man it was so loud.. when you were riding down on the elevator by the second floor you couldn't hear yourself. it's a sports type bar on the main floor, bikini contest on the weekend. if you are young and like a loud place, you would enjoy it, it was referred to us by a friend who was in his early 30's.

We are considering going to South Beach the night before our cruise. We've been to the bayside area twice...pretty much seen it. How far is South Beach from the Port?

Dicta

Yeah, as posted above it's just 10 minutes or so across the MacArthur Causeway... It's far better and a LOT more fun than Bayside! Ocean Drive between 5th & 15th Streets is full of sidewalk cafes in front of all the old art deco hotels and have some of the best people watching on the planet. There are many shops along Collins Avenue and Lincoln Road Mall.
