Does your carry on bag have to be a certain size? Can any bag be a carry on?

I have seen full size bags go through the scanner. If not, it's no big deal to walk back outside to check the luggage with the porters.

Your luggage just has to be able to fit through their scanner. If it does, you can carry it on. I have only been to one port where they required full-sized bags to be checked. That's Barcelona. They only allowed true carry-on sized items to be carried on. Everything else had to be checked.

I am not certain how strictly it is enforced, but the carry on size restriction is:

24"W x 16"H

 

It does have to fit through a scanner.
