Puerto Rico is US territory. So you don't need passport to fly to/from and you can use the almighty dollar.

 

HOWEVER if you miss the ship in any of the non-US ports you'll be in a fix. Can't fly back to US from foreign without passport.

I never travel without my passport. It is safer, gets you through lines quicker and is the best form of ID.

Having a passport is a good idea for any traveling. I take,one anytime I fly, even domestically. But you are not required to have it for any closed loop cruise from a US Port. San Juan is a US port. (Assuming you are a US citizen of course.)

No, you do not need a passport. We did this cruise last year with birth certificates and drivers license and had no problems at all.
