We will be staying in Vancouver at the conclusion of our cruise. Our flight back to Australia doesn't leave til late, so we don't want to check out of our hotel until about 6pm, to make the most of our day. Does anyone know of any hotels that will allow this if you pay for a late checkout fee? Or will we need to book and pay for the whole night?

I have not heard of a hotel that will do late check out as late as 6pm. Some hotels will do 1pm. Most hotels that are part of a large chain such as a Marriott or Holiday Inn, will store your luggage after check-out for a few hours so you can enjoy your day.

What you need is usually referred to as a 'day room' - a late check out is not going to go past 1 or 2pm in my experience at least.

Pretty much any hotel that is not fully-booked will be happy to give you a day rate for a room - I know that the Holiday Inn specifically advertises it on their website but rates are not given just 'call this number to book' and the Fairmont at the airport allows booking day rooms online, but even off-season like now the rates begin at c.$120 for 4 hours - it's not a cheap hotel!

I'd suggest that you narrow down your choice of hotels for your post-cruise stay then drop each on your shortlist an email to enquire about cost of staying on in the same room until 6pm.

If you plan to be out all day doing things all you really need is luggage storage - that won't cost anything extra - but if you want access to a shower or somewhere to nap compare the day room prices you're being offered to paying for lounge access at the airport pre-flight instead. The Plaza Premium at YVR has nap rooms and showers available, plus of course you get comfy chairs, nibbles, and free booze that hotels don't generally offer...

Not the greatest location for downtown sightseeing..... but you might want to consider staying at Vancouver Fairmont Airport. Their site advertises "day-use" rooms, which may imply they have additional housekeeping staff.

Give them a call and see if they can accommodate you with a half-day stay. Then again, for what they charge, you can just pay for an extra day at cheaper hotel like the Blue Horizon, Raddison, or Landmark.

Thanks everyone for your tips.

Most hotels will allow you to check out at the normal time (noonish), but will hold your bags for a small fee (1-2$/bag) to pick up later in the day. This will allow you to spend the day in Vancouver, w/o having to purchase an additional night stay at the hotel.
