piper Posted March 10, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 10, 2015 Will they allow a regular sized backpack and purses in to the Colosseum? I couldn't figure out the rules from the website. Thanks in advance
bugeater2 Posted March 11, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2015 Yes. No problem with either a backpack or purse.
Gator92 Posted March 12, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 12, 2015 Piper, you might want to do a little more research to be sure. Everything I am seeing says no backpacks or large bags. There is a whole thread about it on the Rick Steves website.
piper Posted March 12, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted March 12, 2015 I think we've decided not to take a chance and will leave the backpack in the hotel room.
bugeater2 Posted March 12, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) No Backpacks in this Picture:rolleyes: I personally had my backpack on me, my mother had her cross body bag on her and my daughter had her large canvas purse that held her camera and accessories with her. 4friends Posted March 13, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 13, 2015 I am also curious how recent this picture is as we are going next month. There is a whole thread on Trip Advisor about new regulations due to security, allowing only small bags.
bugeater2 Posted March 13, 2015 #9 Share Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) June 2014. Looks like on January 15, 2015 they made the rule change. Only small purses are allowed now. Sorry for the earlier confusion.:o "On January 15th, less than a week after the events in France, it was announced that, effective immediately, bulky handbags, all backpacks, and luggage would no longer be allowed inside the monument, nor can they be taken into the Roman Forum or the Palatine Hill. Small purses and bags will be opened and inspected before going into these sites so even with a skip-the-line ticket, visitors may still end up waiting in a security line." bugeater2 Posted March 13, 2015 #10 Share Posted March 13, 2015 Still not quite sure how long these restrictions will be in effect. Easy to manage in January - Early May but this will be whole different animal during the summer travel season. I'm interested to see if they keep this up once the numbers of travelers from around the world increases and more and more of them show up with backpacks. The only reason I wore mine was to carry the 4 litres of water for our little group of 3 people. It's easy now while it's 50-60 degrees, borderline dangerous when it's 95 degrees and there are not a lot water fountains inside.
ROCruiser Posted March 15, 2015 #11 Share Posted March 15, 2015 Just double-checked my photos. We had no issue bringing backpacks, crossbody bags, purses, etc. into the Colosseum. We were there February 12, 2015. If I remember correctly, they did ask us to open our bags for them as we went through security check but waved us through afterwards. sgcass123 Posted March 22, 2015 #12 Share Posted March 22, 2015 In reference to the picture with the backpacks - they are all the same backpack......anyone else notice that?
keichman Posted March 22, 2015 #13 Share Posted March 22, 2015 In reference to the picture with the backpacks - they are all the same backpack......anyone else notice that? That usually indicates that it is a tour group, where the operator has provided a backpack as a giveaway. I still have mine from 1986!
RNRcruisers Posted March 23, 2015 #14 Share Posted March 23, 2015 We were just there January 23rd and my sis-in-law carried a backpack. They looked inside when we entered Palatine Hill but not Colosseum. No problems carrying it.
H2OH! Posted March 24, 2015 #15 Share Posted March 24, 2015 We were just in Rome at the colosseum mid-feb 2015. We were told to only bring small purses no backpacks...well, there were tons of people with backpacks. To be safe just carry a smaller purse so if they get serious about no backpacks you won't be turned away. Amy
dd57 Posted March 24, 2015 #16 Share Posted March 24, 2015 The Vatican website has dimensions on the sizes of bags that are allowed (still on the small/medium size). I am hoping that the Colosseum will allow the same size bags.
Girr Posted March 25, 2015 #17 Share Posted March 25, 2015 I know I would hate to be denied entrance because it was the day they decided to enforce the rule. I'd leave the backpack behind.
cruisingmimi Posted March 25, 2015 #18 Share Posted March 25, 2015 Trip Advisor reports that no backpacks allowed and people have left their backpacks on the ground outside the Colosseum. Think it depends upon who is on security the day you go. To be safe I would leave your backpack at hotel. A small purse looks like it would be acceptable. dd57 Posted March 26, 2015 #19 Share Posted March 26, 2015 I meant that the Vatican describes the size of handbags - purses. That is what I am hoping is the same.
