Silly Question - Taxi tipping

This may seem silly, but the last time I took a taxi was about 20 years ago in NYC. Can anyone give me a general idea of decent tip for a taxi driver on the island. We will be taking a taxi from the port to the Atlantis (myself, DH and our 2 DD), so I know the fare will run about $14-$18 (and I know to negotiate that before getting in). I just have no idea what type of tip to provide on top of that. Also would this apply to other islands? We will be taking a taxi from the port to Little Divi Bay in St. Marten also. Can you help?? Thanks so much - counting the days and getting VERY excited. :D

I usually give the driver a few extra bucks. If the trip is $12 - give them $15 or so. 20% may be the norm, although, on a short trip ($5), I still give them $3 or $4.

I usually just round up.. so a $12 fare become $15 - $18 becomes $20 etc.

For a $5 fare, I just add $1.

I come from NYC where the norm is more like $.40 - $1. No need to be more extravagent just because you're on vacation.

If you get a narrated tour from the driver, I add a couple dollars for his contribution.

I noticed you had a 14 year old. I think if my memory serves me correctly that there are 2 other families already posting that have a 14 yr old daughter and a 14 yr old son.

 

So if you see this come on over and meet us before you sail.
