keep in mind that airlines make a LOT of money off of cargo, especially on international flights

Icelandair fills their holds with fish every time.

Our first trip to San Juan we saw an American plane being emptied of tons of carrots.

like others said, it is probably needed for another flight in rome. delta is pretty good about sending you emails with any changes to your itinerary, but i'd check it monthly(til the last month, then weekly). if there is a major time change/cancellation, there is no fee for you to change your flight as long as the dates and point of origin/destination do not change. our international flight earlier this month had over an hour time change and we had the option to change it but opted to keep our itinerary (despite a LONG layover in JFK) due to the alternate connection in ATL only being an hour.

Just wait it out, see what happens.
