La Spezia ferry question

We stopped at La Spezia this Wednesday during an Allure of the Seas cruise and travelled to Cinque Terre.

La Spezia is an industrial port (like Civitavecchia), so unless you are taking a cruise ship excursion you will need to take a free shuttle bus to the small terminal building at the port entrance. You have no option to walk instead of a bus.

When we visited there was an information desk inside the terminal that provided excellent advice and a great La Spezia map. They showed us the walking route to the bus stop that goes to the train station. It is on a street in front of the Cathedral. The fare is 1.50 Euros if you purchase the tickets in advance or 3.00 Euros if you purchase them on the bus (one-way). There is a bar/news agency 80 metres to the right of the bus stop where you can purchase the tickets.

At the train station you can purchase the one day Cinque Terre card for 12 Euros each. It includes your train fares to and from Cinque Terre and within any if the towns so that you can use it as a hop-on hop-off service whenever you like.

There is a set one-way price for taxis from the port to the terminal (or reverse) of 15 Euros.

We used the bus to the train station and taxi back afterwards. Both options worked well and we had a fantastic day visiting three of the towns.

How far is the port in La Spezia to the ferry station to go to Cinque Terre? Would you recommend the ferry or is it best to go by train? Thanks!

It was about a 6-7 minute straight walk from ship to the ferry station. I really enjoyed seeing the villages from the water and would have come back by ferry but it rained so I took the quick route home (train). It's about a 25 minute walk back from the train station to the ship. All the best, Tony

For the current ferry timetable visit http://www.apathtolunch.com/2014/06/complete-cinque-terre-portovenere-la.html?m=1

For the train timetable visit the Trenitalia website and search for trains from La Spezia to Monterosso Al Mare.

Taxis direct to the CT would be possible but expensive and not necessarily a big time saver because the train is a quicker route.
