visiting capri from salerno

We are on a Cunard cruise docking in Salerno in September 2015 and would like to visit Capri for the day. What is the best way of doing this. It has been suggested we should take the 8.40 fast ferry to Capri but there is no return ferry in time for our boarding at 5.15. Any suggestions?

I responded on your other thread but you didn't share your port times on that one. As you'll see in the links I provided, because of your departure time you cannot get to Capri on your own as the return boats come back too late.

Your only option DIY would be to depart Capri earlier and take a boat to Amalfi, then another boat from Amalfi to Salerno. Note that the boats from Amalfi to Salerno will go to Piazza Concordia, so you'll need to leave enough time to get to Molo Gennaio, about a mile and a half walk.

You will wind up with very little time on Capri. The Alicost 8:40 departure arrives on Capri at 10:50 AM. http://www.alicost.it/?page_id=202&lang=en

The last departure from Amalfi to Salerno that gets you back in time departs Amalfi at 4:15 PM, arriving just before 5 PM, giving you enough time to walk the mile and a half back before your on-board time.

To make that 4:15 departure from Amalfi you'd have to take the 11:40 AM Alicost departure from Capri, arriving at 12:40 PM.

In other words, you'd have less than an hour on Capri and two and a half hours in Amalfi.

I am convinced that even if the cruise lines don't set their departure times to make it impossible to get to Capri on your own, they are not sad about it. You are left with only one viable option for getting to Capri from this cruise, a ship's excursion using a chartered boat.

I've thought of another way you can do this, although it will seem somewhat convoluted.

Get the 8:40 AM ferry to Capri, arriving at 10:50 AM.

Enjoy nearly three hours on Capri, then take the 1:40 PM high speed ferry to Naples, arriving at 2:30 PM.

Make your way to the Napoli Centrale train station (the new metro, the #1 tram, or a taxi) and catch the next train to Salerno. There's a 2:50, a 3:05, and a 3:30, any of which will get you to Salerno with plenty of time to get back to the ship. This can be accomplished by bus or taxi.
