Booking All-Day Taxi from PDC: Costs? Ideas?

I'm considering a cruise on the Grand Princess that will bring me near Playa del Carmen next February (following a ferry trip from Cozumel). I would like to visit Tulum, and possibly Coba or other archaeological sites. I was thinking it might make sense to rent a taxi in PDC for the entire day so I could stay as long (or as short) as I wanted at each site. I also figured I could have more control over getting back to the ship early, perhaps with enough time to check on Chankanaab on Cozumel.

Has anyone done this before, and if so, what do you think a taxi for the day would cost? Do you think it's worth it, or should I stick to a more organized tour? I don't want to rent a car.

Thanks for the input.
