SNUBA on your own?

I see there are two places to Snuba in Cozumel - one in Chankanaab, which is farther and harder to get to, and another offered by CozWaterSports website near the pier. But, if you are arriving on Carnival, (which we are) they won't let you book saying you must book with the ship (at a higher price of course).

My question is, how do they know, if I just show up and say I want to Snuba? As long as I don't show them my Carnival ID or my Carnival towel, they are not going to question me, right?

Or, if I get off the ship, are there tour companies right there that I can just sign up with for Snuba?

We are also going to Grand Cayman and there is one place there to Snuba as well...so I'm not sure which is best - Cozumel or GC.

Any thoughts?
