tifftoff Posted October 17, 2015 #26 Share Posted October 17, 2015 1990 our honeymoon cruise on the Cunard Countess to the Caribbean - a lovely ship even with the tin drawers and no balcony. Celebrated our Silver Wedding this year on the Queen Elizabeth - another lovely ship, but how things change over the years - a balcony is a must now. Back on the Cunard Countess again in 1993 plus two cruises on the Cunard Princess between 1990 and 1994. Happy memories of both ships.
edwardh1 Posted October 18, 2015 #27 Share Posted October 18, 2015 when did air travel take off- when the 747 started flying? Mid 70s ?. were these two ships competing with that? or did jumbo jets in any way HELP cruise ships? I assume both of these two ships were "new" construction in 1982? Underwatr Posted October 18, 2015 #28 Share Posted October 18, 2015 The 747 was introduced around 1970 but transatlantic passenger jet service boomed in the early 1960s.
jburton59 Posted October 18, 2015 #29 Share Posted October 18, 2015 The Boeing 707 is usually credited with making mass transatlantic air service affordable. They had a capacity of over 100 people. First launched in the late 1950s, 707s really took off (sorry for the pun) in the early 1960s, and ships like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth began crossing at a fraction of full capacity and were withdrawn from service on the transatlantic runs by the end of the decade.
